Northern Zoul

Z’et er bevidst. Sådan var skrivemåden nemlig første gang etiketten blev sat på papir af den engelske soulentusiast, journalist og pladebutiksejer Dave Godin, i en artikel i bladet ’Blues & Soul’ i 1970. I 1964 havde Godin dannet The Tamla Motown Appreciation Society. Et initiativ, der hurtigt blev lagt mærke til i USA. Året efter var Godin således ansat som pladeselskabets rådgiver i England.

Begrebet 'Northern Zoul' brugte han første gang i 1968, som en form for salgstrick overfor sine ekspedienter i pladeforretningen Soul City. Konkret var det for at skelne de sene tressers mere funky-soul fra Motown-lyden. I 2002 sagde Godin til magasinet ’Mojo’:

”I had started to notice that northern football fans who were in London to follow their team were coming into the store to buy records, but they weren’t interested in the latest developments in the black American chart. I devised the name as a shorthand sales term. It was just to say ‘if you’ve got customers from the north, don’t waste time playing them records currently in the US black chart, just play them what they like - ‘Northern Soul’ ”
