“Though it’ll turn 10 years old this year, Was Dead is ageless. The debut release by Kyle Thomas’s project King Tuff sounds like it could have been recorded any time in the past 50 years, so long as you take out a few modern sound effects. It is psychedelic enough to have fit easily in 1968 but polished enough to live freely in the aughts and beyond, marinating forever in modern garage rock folklore. Start with “Animal” for Thomas’s raspy vocals encapsulated in relatable, simple lyrics or perhaps try the breakout hit, “Sun Medallion,” for a hazy, distorted thought-provoking dive. The album is relatively short and over before you want it to be, so don’t be afraid to listen twice.”
