’Burn up the herbs’

I begyndelsen af 1970’erne havde den tidligere forsanger fra den jamaicanske rock-steady vokalgruppe The Paragons, John Holt, en triviel mani med at indspille reggaecoverversioner med stygge strygerarrangementer af populære hit. Kris Kristoffersens ’Help Me Make It Through The Night’ kan måske lige gå an. Det kan man mildeste talt ikke sige om hans udgaver af Billy Joel’s ’Just The Way You Are’ og Diana Ross’ ’Touch Me In The Morning’. I dag vil de nok være at finde indenfor den afart af reggae, der hedder Lovers Rock.

Heldigvis forsøgte John Holt af og til at hente inspiration i rootsreggaen. I 1983 kom albummet Police In Helicopter, hvor især titelnumret har noget at byde på:

”Yes boss, yes boss, yes boss, yes boss...

Police in helicopter, a search for marijuana.
Police man in the streets, searching for collie weed.
Soldiers in the field, burnin the collie weed.
But if you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.
If you continue to burn up the herbs, we gonna burn down the cane fields.”
