Til trods for, at Paul
Westerbergs skarpe intellekt, hans kreative begavelse og evne til at formulere
tanker og følelser, har han altid forsvaret det at være uskolet, selvlært eller
hvad man nu engang kalder det. Et statement eller en rockattitude, man
genkender fra et helt kuld af musikere fra den amerikanske arbejderklasse og
lavere middelklasse. Det er vistnok det åbningssangen på ’14 Songs’ handler om:
