Stinson blev smidt ud af The Replacements i 1986. Mest af alt for et eskalerende brug af stoffer, men hans modvilje eller manglende evne til at lære Paul Westerbergs mere modne materiale at kende, er også blevet nævnt som en grund til, at han måtte forlade bandet. Bob Stinson døde af organsvigt i februar 1995.
