Sagt uden for mange ord, er ovennævnte teksteksempler vist udtryk for de briller som Guthrie så verden igennem. Det var ikke kun den amerikanske venstrefløj, der i Roosevelt havde en præsident, som de mente talte deres sag. Under Roosevelts tid i embedet (1933-1945), mistede republikanerne også støtten fra tusindvis af den sorte befolkning, der ellers havde bakket op om partiet, siden Lincoln.
