Paste Magazine har tidligere
kåret de fedeste new wave- og alt. country-plader. Bladet har sikkert også
været forbi andre musikgenrer, men det er i så fald gået min opmærksomhed
forbi. Tidsmæssigt strækker garagerock-listen sig fra 1965-2017, så det er
noget af en mundfuld, musikjournalisterne gaber over.
Om ikke andet, så gav listen mig
lyst til at genhøre King Tuffs fremragende skive, ’Was Dead’, fra 2008. Billedet
foroven er forøvrigt af King Tuff med band.
“Though it’ll turn 10
years old this year, Was Dead is ageless. The debut release by Kyle Thomas’s
project King Tuff sounds like it could have been recorded any time in the past
50 years, so long as you take out a few modern sound effects. It is psychedelic
enough to have fit easily in 1968 but polished enough to live freely in the
aughts and beyond, marinating forever in modern garage rock folklore. Start
with “Animal” for Thomas’s raspy vocals encapsulated in relatable, simple
lyrics or perhaps try the breakout hit, “Sun Medallion,” for a hazy, distorted
thought-provoking dive. The album is relatively short and over before you want
it to be, so don’t be afraid to listen twice.”
